Life’s Best Things

There are many things we can’t do,
There are great places we will always see on the internet,
There are some foods we may handle only in writing and imagination,
And talk about lifestyle…
Can the world allow all of us to afford a fortnight in Acapulco or the Maldives?
What about a month on the East African Coast?
And talk of the cars…
Do you even drive?
Aren’t you being towed here and there on a commuter bus?
And that remains the story of life’s great things.

What about life’s best things?
Unquestionable reputation…
A well-ordered, simple life with no cravings for artificiality…
A pious and consistent life…
A good, bubbly, and healthy life…
The gift of being in a family, even if it’s dysfunctional…
Being in your right mind…
Commanding the attention and respect of reliable and productive friends…
Having strength for today and a bright hope tomorrow…
Everyone can afford them,
And this is the balance of life,
We may not all be able to afford great things, But we all can afford life’s best things.

So, don’t confuse them,
Life’s great things and life’s best things,
For many sacrifice life’s best things,
As they work themselves to achieve life’s great things,
And realize they have it but have traded away life’s best things,
It would be enviable to have them both,
But if only one is possible,
I’ll choose life’s best things.

  1. Life’s best things—simplicity, honesty, truthfulness, purity, unsullied integrity—are not to be bought or sold. They are free to the illiterate as to the educated, to the white man as to the black man, to the poor man as to the king upon his throne…. TMK 85.4
