In 1871, Spafford, a successful lawyer and devout Christian, lost most of his real estate investments in the Great Chicago Fire. Just two years later, he sent his wife and four daughters ahead of him to Europe. Tragically, the ship they were on collided with another vessel and sank. All four daughters perished. When Spafford later sailed across the Atlantic to meet his grieving wife, the ship’s captain told him when they were passing the very spot where his daughters had drowned.
