Men and women struggle
To be free and independent
Not owing no one nothing
Neither expecting anything from someone.
But could it be that they lied to us,
Who told us that we need to be autonomous?
I don’t mean an outright lie,
But a subtle, well-calculated one that hides between the jot and tittle.
Of course, it is sweet to get everything done our way every time we need it,
When I want to eat my coveted dish, that I double as the best dresser of the same,
When I want to outshine the lilies of the valley, that I double as the top-tier tailor,
When I want to beautify my space, that I work on my art with a Michelangelesque precision,
Think of it …
But life has refused to work like that,
Surgeons don’t dissect themselves; they could depend on, for their treatment, another with mean stature and experience,
And just in case you have forgotten, your favorite barber also has their favorite barber,
Think of it…
So, we are dependent
After gaining financial freedom,
We still need to hire a skill to mow our lawn and fix our septic,
What if poverty be our lot?
Then, we can’t help but trade our skills,
To be a pauper and deficient in skill is really writing our own epitaphs.
What if we manage to be a jack of all trades,
And manage to become a master of all,
Could the world stop and say that there goes an independent man or a woman?
Oh No!
We still depend on God for our breath, sanity, and life.
So, instead of a futile struggle for independence,
Anchor yourself with dependable people by being dependable yourself,
But human effort is frail and transient,
Why not lean on the everlasting arms?
We are not safe in following the imaginations of our own hearts. We cannot be independent. Our only safety is in dependence on God our Redeemer
—That I May Know Him p. 231.5
