People Who Don’t Qualify to Have a Favourite Bible Verse

Unheard of! From whence did you get this? Yes, there are people who don’t qualify to have a favourite bible verse. Could you be one of them? What is the Spiritual consequence of this? Is there hope, if any?

The word ‘favourite’ can be defined in many ways. But the definition which stands out for me is “ranked comparatively above the rest of the same kind.” This is a comparative term. For you to be able to intelligently rank one thing above others, you must have the ability to give an opinion about the rest and quantify why you settle for the one you have chosen. You must have interacted with the rest of the population to be able to single out a parameter. If you are intrigued by the one you find appealing, and you are ignorant of even one of the remaining ones, you don’t qualify to declare one a favourite.

I tend to think the word ‘favourite’ is one of the most misused words. For instance, a young man who is in love may tell his girlfriend, “You are my favourite girl.” while he may be sincere, without knowing all the other girls who now are like a big joke altogether, his compliment and endearment are presumptive. When teacher Q is your favourite, it means you have interacted with the rest of the teaching staff, and you can rank them.

With this foundation, we can now match into the big questions. Who qualifies, and who qualifies not, to have a favourite bible verse?

If you read, “For I know the plans I think towards you, plans for prosperity and not evil”, you cannot assume it’s your favourite before you read all the remaining verses. How does the Bible function?

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. 1 Timothy 3:16-17

The Bible functions in the context of “all Scriptures“. All Scriptures mean Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. This is not a Prophetic language but a literal language. This concept rebukes every claim of a sub-compartmentalized view of the Scriptures. You’ve heard people saying, “I’m a New Testament Christian, I’m an Old Testament Christian, I’m a Pauline Epistles Christian, et cetera.” The Bible boldly silence such mentality and is loudly calling for reforms. Don’t join the bandwagon of those who read the bible with one eye blinded.

For you to have a favourite bible verse, you must be able to intelligently compare it with the rest of the verses. If you have only read the Historical books then you don’t qualify to have a favourite verse. If you are only mesmerized by poetic books like Song of Songs, then you ain’t qualified to have a favourite bible verse. The entire Bible is written that we may be thoroughly equipped unto all good works. We, therefore, have a grand duty to work on our readership of the Bible. We must go above and beyond to know the truth needed for our growth in righteousness.
